“I am so appreciative of everything they did for me. Along with the therapy they helped me understand what was going on with my body. I would recommend them to anyone who needs this type of intense care.” - Mr. Doug Hipp
Doug Hipp wasn’t feeling well when he woke up on a Thursday morning in July. As he got out of bed he had trouble balancing himself and walking down his hallway. “I told my wife I just didn’t feel right,” he said. “She took me to a nearby urgent care center to get checked out. My blood pressure was very high so I was given some medication and then literally fell out of the chair on to the floor.” He was having a stroke.
Mr. Hipp was taken by ambulance to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center where he was treated for a week before his doctor recommended that he be transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute of Northwest Florida in Destin. “I lost all use of the left side of my body. While my ability to think was not affected, my face was numb and my speech was affected. When I arrived at the rehabilitation center I couldn’t walk; they had to pick me up with a lift. They were doing everything for me.”
Mr. Hipp spent nearly two months receiving intensive therapy from his team of doctors, nurses, and therapists. “The care I received was outstanding,” he said. “The therapists were all very professional, attentive to my needs and what my goals were. Of course my goal was to walk. They helped me relearn to manage myself.” He said that he also observed how they helped other patients. “It wasn’t just me. I saw the compassion and excellent care they provided other people who were suffering from broken hips or legs, strokes, and other trauma. They are doing fantastic work there.”
While his intensive inpatient therapy is over, Mr. Hipp continues to receive outpatient therapy three times a week and says the people at the Rehabilitation Institute are still helping him. “They answer my questions, help me get medications ordered, and just provide continued moral support.”
“I am so appreciative of everything they did for me. Along with the therapy they helped me understand what was going on with my body. I would recommend them to anyone who needs this type of intense care.” And as for meeting his main goal, less than three months after his stroke, he is walking again with the help of a special hemi walker and looks forward to continued improvement.
