Trauma center

Trauma centers provide highly-trained physicians, specialists, critical care nurses and support staff who are available around the clock to care for your most serious healthcare needs. Trauma centers often provide burn care for individuals suffering from minor to severe burns.

Level II Trauma Center in Fort Walton Beach, Florida

As the county's only Level II Trauma Center, our hospital provides a level of care beyond the capabilities of the emergency rooms (ERs) at local hospitals.

Trauma is a special type of medical emergency that requires specialized training and critical treatment. Traumatic injuries can be further complicated or worsened by psychiatric, behavioral and social factors. HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital is a regional trauma center — as designated by the Florida Department of Health and American College of Surgeons — that handles serious, life-threatening injuries and complex cases.

  • Gunshot wounds or stabbings
  • Injuries sustained from motor vehicle collisions

Our trauma center services

Because we adhere to strict quality and safety standards set by the American College of Surgeons, seriously injured patients who come to us are more likely to have better outcomes.

Pediatric trauma care

For children, we have a dedicated pediatric ER adjacent to our main ER. Our pediatric ER is staffed by physicians who are board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine. This means whenever you bring your child to our trauma center, we have pediatric-trained physicians ready to meet the unique needs of your child.

Trauma surgery

We have two dedicated trauma operating rooms (ORs), providing our surgeons rapid access to ORs equipped for trauma surgeries. We also have computerized tomography scanners right in the ER, with ready access to blood products through our blood bank.

Trauma healing and rehabilitation

Our rehabilitation therapists help patients reach their full potential after experiencing a medical trauma. As part of that, we offer inpatient and outpatient physical therapy and rehabilitation services. Our inpatient rehabilitation center, Rehabilitation Institute of North Florida, is the only acute care rehabilitation facility of its kind in the area. Here, we help patients restore function and regain mobility following a traumatic event.

Public education and awareness

We take a leadership role in trauma prevention. This includes offering public education and continuing education of trauma team members as we participate in research and quality assessment initiatives. We focus on injury prevention, offering a number of programs — including senior fall prevention programs, distracted driving education events and bleeding control courses — to keep our community safe.
