For a 24-hour referral to our mental health hospital, please contact our team at (850) 315-8000.

Our hospital is home to the Psychiatric Treatment Center, a 48-bed inpatient unit committed to providing highly monitored mental health care. We care for adults 18 years old and older who are in need of intensive psychiatric treatment in an inpatient hospital setting.

The Psychiatric Treatment Center is located on the first floor of our main hospital building and is split into two separate 24-bed acute care psychiatric units.

Mental health continuum of care

At the Psychiatric Treatment Center, we care for patients experiencing a variety of mental health conditions.

Upon admission to our inpatient unit, we perform a comprehensive evaluation. Following this evaluation, we develop an individualized plan of care based on the patient's unique needs.

We take into account all factors when formulating a treatment plan. This includes the patient's medical history, psychiatric history, family support and psychosocial components.

The goal of our inpatient program is to stabilize patients, improve their ability to function in everyday situations and help them transition to the next level of care, such as an outpatient mental health program.

Mental health care team

Fort Walton Beach Medical Center's behavioral health program is home to an experienced team of mental health professionals. This team works hard to promote a spirit of hope and compassion for patients with behavioral health conditions.

Our team includes:

  • Administrative staff
  • Licensed mental health counselors
  • Mental health technicians
  • Psychiatrists
  • Registered nurses (RNs)
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP)
  • Social workers
  • Therapeutic activities service personnel

Our nursing staff monitors patients' physical and mental well-being, provides pharmaceutical education and administers medications as ordered by a physician and coordinates patients' care.

Our social workers

The social workers on our staff coordinate with medical professionals to provide optimal patient care. Our social workers assist with:

  • Discharge planning
  • Individual, marital and family therapeutic sessions
  • Psychosocial assessments

The social workers act as patient advocates in treatment and discharge planning. They are also available to assist patients in accessing community services.

Our social workers explore and facilitate patient referrals to group homes, therapeutic foster homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes.

Social workers are trained to identify signs of neglect, abuse and exploitation and can report to appropriate state and community agencies, as needed.

Our mental health counselors

Our licensed mental health counselors are part of the multidisciplinary team that meets four days a week to carry out treatment for each patient. Each treatment plan addresses the primary concerns that necessitated an inpatient hospital stay.

Counselors work with our nursing staff to conduct group therapy sessions seven days a week. Group therapy is the primary treatment used for patients in the Psychiatric Treatment Center.

Group sessions may focus on:

  • Dual diagnosis (co-occurring substance abuse and mental illness)
  • Education groups to address depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, grief and other conditions
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Relaxation
  • Trauma and abuse for patients experiencing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Dual diagnosis track

Within our group therapy program is the dual diagnosis track. To determine if a patient may benefit from this track, they are given an extensive drug and alcohol assessment.

Dual diagnosis patients attend specialized group therapy sessions and are also seen on an individual basis, as needed.

Our goal is to provide alcohol and drug-related education to help patients in this program on their road to recovery.

Therapeutic activities services

The Psychiatric Treatment Center offers a therapeutic activities services program. This program provides recreational experiences for our inpatients.

With this program, we help patients achieve:

  • Decreased anxiety and tension
  • Elevated self-esteem
  • Improved ability to follow directions
  • Improved hand/eye coordination
  • Improved interpersonal skills and communication
