Rehabilitation Institute of Northwest Florida to Open in New Location

May 16, 2011

The location and name have changed, but the team and the exceptional care will remain the same.

The Rehabilitation Institute of Northwest Florida will celebrate its new location with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. May 24 at 996 Airport Road, less than one mile north of Highway 98, across from the Destin Airport. The Destin Emergency Care Center is also at this location. The public is invited to the reception and to preview the new facility.

The building has been renovated in anticipation of the move. According to Program Director Rebecca Jones, the move means a larger facility with private rooms for every patient, larger rehabilitation areas, updated equipment and a dining room that is twice the size of the previous one. The state-of-the-art updates reflect the quality service their patients have come to expect from the premier rehabilitation facility in the area and the only inpatient acute rehab in Okaloosa, Walton, and Santa Rosa Counties.

The Institute is a 20-bed, comprehensive medical rehabilitation unit helping patients recover from strokes, neurological disorders, trauma, hip fractures, amputations, and other issues. Staff includes licensed physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, social workers, registered nurses, and patient care technicians. Patients receive proactive, round-the-clock care -- including daily physician rounding -- with the primary goal of regaining independence.

Patients will move to the new facility on June 1.

Formerly known as the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, the facility has been serving the community for 15 years from its previous location in the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center (FWBMC).

The institute was recently accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) as a Stroke Specialty Program and also was granted a re-certification of its Inpatient Rehab Program Accreditation. It is also fully accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO).
